The question of college is a pressing concern for most high school students: to go, or not to go, that is the question. Inevitably they come face to face with one of the most persistent myths in American education today. Don’t miss “The College Conspiracy” documentary at the Biblical Concourse of Home Universities. It will save you tens of thousands of dollars.

Myth: A four-year college education is the ticket to success in life.

To address this myth, we prevailed on the talents of free-lance writer, Robert Wimer. Mr. Wimer is the President of “Desire A Difference,” a business consultant from Trenton, Missouri. His passion is to help individuals, groups / organizations and small businesses leverage technology that will get their voice heard in the online and offline world, as well as helping people create proper mindsets that allow them to not only acquire more wealth, but keep it.

The Myth About Education, Success & Wealth

By Robert Wimer

On a wonderful spring day long ago, I had a toothache, and it was terrible. Like most people, I disliked going to the dentist for obvious reasons, but when you have to go, you have to bite the bullet. When I got to the waiting room, Dr. Doe (name omitted) got me in right away. I sat in the chair with the paper napkin on my chest and a bright light in my mouth awaiting the king of pain.

Dentists invariably talk to their patients when they have a whole mess of machinery and metal in your mouth, but amazingly they can understand every word that comes out, even when you speak only in vowels. He asked me what kind of work I was doing.

“Well, I’m going to get my certification, so I can work on computers.”

He knew that I dropped out of college, so the questions were invariably set up to guide me in a verbal corner so he could dispense his brand of logic & wisdom.

“Now Bob…(I was at the age where I was being called “Bob”)…you’ve got to go to college, get your degree so you can get a real job. This cer-ti-fi-ca-tion business is just plain silly.”

You got to understand that when you are depending on a person to alleviate your pain, and when he’s holding a drill with shaky hands near your mouth, you have to bite your tongue and listen.

For thirty minutes, I listened to his pretentious wisdom and to this day I don’t know which was more painful, the root canal, or his ignorance. In the end, I was grateful for his skills…skills that could have only been acquired by going to a university. He cured my ills, but another set in soon after, the ill of ignorance, not on my part, but his. The idea that education and attending school are synonymous.

Depending on the path you choose in life, you will have to avail yourself of the resources of a higher education. Universities have resources, contacts, labs, and educators that can’t be found anywhere else, but if you want to make money work for you…to acquire true wealth, education is paramount, but not a college degree.

Within my lifetime, I’ve seen the requirements of students elevate just to get an average paying job. A high school diploma was all that was needed 50 years ago, then it was a college degree, then your masters, then a doctorate, and now, you have to have and continue to have extra hours on top of your decades of education. You have to stop and look at the grand scheme of your life…..do you want an education, to learn how to make money, and lots of it, work for you, or do you want a piece of paper to hang on your wall?

Unfortunately, in this world, 95 percent of people go the tradition route of what they call success…..work hard, go to school, get good grades, get a good job that has good pay, benefits, retirement, and save. This is what is taught in schools and in society, but the cold hard fact is that to make great wealth, you have to take risks, work smart, make your own opportunities, and never stop learning. Many students stop their education after the degree or the attainment of a few letters after their name. Getting a degree does not mean instant success, but it can mean instant mediocrity.

If you want to find a nice 5 to 6 figure job with great benefits, a spectacular retirement plan and work for a company that will show you no loyalty for all the years of dedication and education that you have invested, please, work hard, go to school, get good grades, look for a good job that has great pay, benefits, retirement, and save, in other words, be a slave to money and the antiquated ideal. If you want to learn how to make money work for you, take risks, make your own opportunities, start your own company, or better yet, own one, always be in a process of learning about everything, including money, and never let an old man tell you that what you are doing is just plain silly.

“Back to school” is the perennial slogan we hear every fall. But this year we find a new spin not far beneath the surface. It’s a new “Christian” approach to evolution. It is designed to emasculate Christianity by removing the proverbial chip from its shoulder. “Peace talks” with an unprecedented compromise are now being offered.

“Offered by whom?” you ask. A theistic evolutionary organization that calls itself the BioLogos Foundation is presenting to Christian parents an alternative to the tension between themselves and their school-age children over the teaching of evolution in the public school system.

Myth: Evolution and Christianity are not antithetical. They should be at ease with one another.

Creation Ministries International (CMI) has produced an excellent article <http://creation.com/its-not-christianity> with a number of links citing the heretical danger of this approach to school children and even parents. In fact, Christian parents are even persuaded to go ahead and teach evolution to their children. In other words, roll over and play dead. Let the battle-worn surrender; soul, take thine ease. Hear the Siren call of humanism. You are getting sleeeepy. Lay down your weapons. Be like “the children of Ephraim” who “being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle” (Psalm 78:9). This would make the wolves in sheep’s clothing happy.

Even arch atheist Richard Dawkins sees through this façade:

I think the evangelical Christians have really sort of got it right in a way, in seeing evolution as the enemy. Whereas the more, what shall we say, sophisticated theologians are quite happy to live with evolution, I think they’re deluded. I think the evangelicals have got it right, in that there really is a deep incompatibility between evolution and Christianity. (Howard Condor interviewing Richard Dawkins on Revelation TV, Feb 2011; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wfe4IUB9NTk)

The CMI article goes on to comment:

So, of course, by advocating this strategy, BioLogos is actually on the side of the atheists, even if they are not consciously promoting atheism. It seems ironic that the world’s leading atheists can see that this type of Christianity is no Christianity at all, but Biologos themselves apparently cannot see (or dare admit to?) the hypocrisy. That should tell us something about ‘how’ Christian they are!

It appears that this hybrid approach is gaining no respect from the evolutionist community. In a debate with Francis Collins, American physician-geneticist, founder of the BioLogos Foundation, who said that Adam and Eve were never real people, Richard Dawkins replied to this mishmash:

I think that’s [referring to theistic evolution] a tremendous cop-out. If God wanted to create life and create humans, it would be slightly odd that he should choose the extraordinarily roundabout way of waiting for 10 billion years before life got started and then waiting for another 4 billion years until you got human beings capable of worshiping and sinning and all the other things religious people are interested in.”

Case closed: In effect, the BioLogos Foundation, while calling itself evangelical, is calling the apostle Paul a liar and even the Lord Jesus Christ Himself! Paul cites Adam by name as a real person no less than seven times: Rom. 5:14; 1 Cor. 15:22,45; 1 Tim. 2:13,-14. Jesus, in two gospel accounts, makes reference to the creation of the first couple: Matt. 19:4; Mark 10:6.

While thanking CMI for warning parents of this deadly viper, Education Mythbusters would urge them to take the next obvious step and admonish them to remove their children from the temples of Baal. However, this is what CMI recommends:

The answer is not necessarily to pull out of the schools and the universities. Christian anti-intellectualism has never been the answer or provided a solution that has ultimately strengthened the Church. [Emphasis added]

“Christian anti-intellectualism”? Creation Research Institute CRI) has already proven how anti-intellectual the evolution position is. It is not only anti-intellectual to keep your children IN public school, It is anti-biblical! Parents should have total control over who educates their children. Nevertheless, CMI is correct in providing immunity books for parents to fortify their children. Major help for homeschooling parents is available at King’s Way Classical Academy.

Private education in colonial America produced the highest rates of literacy America has ever known.

Nonetheless, the public “common school” was sold to Americans in the early 19th Century on the pretense of providing literacy for all. Going on two centuries now, the public school system has dominated the field of education, to the point that being without it has become unthinkable. It has become a cultural icon (or idol) in America that commands a degree of reverence not unlike that of the “high places” in ancient Israel.

Myth: Without public education, we would be a nation of illiterates.

On the contrary, it’s more accurate to say we’ve already become a nation of illiterates with public education. Education has become more “public” than ever, but the quality is in a tailspin, morally, spiritually, and academically.

American civilization did not begin in a bed of roses; it began in a rugged and hostile wilderness. The early settlers had to fend for themselves and their families just to keep body and soul together. They certainly did not have government to fall back on to educate their children. They took seriously the admonition of Moses to the Israelites to obey God’s law in subjecting their children to a godly education. According to Forgotten American History: Puritan Education By Sam Blumenfeld Printed in Practical Homeschooling #57, 2004, the Puritans put a high premium on teaching their young, bringing literacy and scriptural teaching to its high point in early America. “To the Puritans, the education of children was uppermost in their minds.” He also quoted a General Court order “…that all masters of families do, once a week, at least, catechize their children and servants in the grounds and principles of religion.

But you say, “Times have changed since those early years.” Indeed, they have. Our culture has drifted into a turbulent sea without anchor, sail or rudder. As a result, many areas of life, including the field of education, have melded into a mindless monotone. In recent times, we’ve seen the fruit of Union control of the public school system. The reason it surfaced in Wisconsin is because Governor Scott Walker not only saw through the facade of public service unions; he had the courage to follow through. Breaking the power of the Education unions is not without its consequences. His vicious enemies have attacked his children on Facebook and bussed in thousands to intimidate his family in their home. Do parents really want to subject their children to this type of mentality?

Sadly, many Christian schools rely on books produced en mass for public school consumption because they can get them more cheaply. Buying propaganda to save a little money on books plays into the hands of these politically correct “educators” who created this poisonous atmosphere in the first place.

On the bright side, however, we have modern technology undreamed of by our predecessors. Government lockstep control has met its match in the internet.

Homeschooling has sent shivers up and down the spines of its enemies. We have tremendous advantages that our forbearers did not have—instant communication of sight and sound. We have no excuse.

Homeschooling families often organize into groups called co-ops, tailor-made to bypass the herd of the cookie-cutter mentality. In addition, there are on-line opportunities to aid homeschooling parents with real time courses, complete with qualified teachers. This can also be a benefit when economic needs make it necessary for both parents to work. One such website is King’s Way Classical Academy http://www.kingswayclassicalacademy.com/ the world’s first on-line classical Christian Academy. Here you will find Old School Teaching/New School Technology

This is our introduction to a series of detailed EDUCATION MYTH BUSTER articles. The best is yet to come. Please don’t jump to conclusions by any negative reports on the homeschooling issue. If you already know the truth, spread the word. Remember Proverbs 18:13. “He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.” Stay tuned.
