MythBusters Case #8 :Does America Really Need an “Education President”?

We’ve heard this siren song for decades.  The snake oil of public education has a track record for lining the pockets of union bosses and school administrators who are willing to play ball with them.  The financial backing comes from the estates of middle class families, many barely making it, to support these ne’er-do-well leaches.  See the full story of how public education got started in America  by clicking here They’re not only stealing their money, they’re stealing their children.  And here is where it gets even worse.

The vicious accelerating undertow of academia is bad enough.  Add to that the progressive mindset agenda, which sets the stage of their psyches to receive the notions of both organic and social evolution.  But even this is not rock bottom.  Read on.

Myth: Our public education system needs that extra boost from the federal level.

 

Let’s take a closer look at this monster and decide whether it should be boosted from any level.

Teachers Unions Go to Bat for Sexual Predators

This shocking headline appeared above an article posted by Twana Blevins on July 30, 2012 from the Wall Street Journal by Campbell Brown.  Miss. Brown begins:

By resisting almost any change aimed at improving our public schools, teachers unions have become a ripe target for reformers across the ideological spectrum. Even Hollywood, famously sympathetic to organized labor, has turned on unions with the documentary “Waiting for ‘Superman'” (2010) and a feature film, “Won’t Back Down,” to be released later this year. But perhaps most damaging to the unions’ credibility is their position on sexual misconduct involving teachers and students in New York schools, which is even causing union members to begin to lose faith.

The article continues by citing several cases in point of outrageous requests from teachers to students (and sometimes getting what they want).  We’re talking about everything from a striptease to ultimate performance!  It’s only fair to ask how widespread these cases are.  Miss Brown tells us:

In the last five years in New York City, 97 tenured teachers or school employees have been charged by the Department of Education with sexual misconduct. Among the charges substantiated by the city’s special commissioner of investigation—that is, found to have sufficient merit that an arbitrator’s full examination was justified—in the 2011-12 school year.

Now let’s look a little closer at the “corrective action” taken by the powers that be.  According to the article, the accused is turned over to an independent investigator (under New York law).  The union and the school district must agree on an arbitrator who is then paid $1400 per day.  For that kind of money we can easily see why the arbitrator would wish to please the union.  “And the unions—believing that they are helping the cause of teachers by being weak on sexual predators—prefer suspensions and fines, and not dismissal, for teachers charged with inappropriate sexual conduct. The effects of this policy are mounting.”

Michael Loeb, a middle school teacher in the Bronx and United Federation of Teachers member, calls this a “horrible situation” and adds, “if you keep these people in the classroom, you are demeaning our profession.”

Maria Elena Rivera says her 14-year-old daughter was stalked by one of her Brooklyn high school teachers (who resigned from his position before the Department of Education decided whether to send the case to arbitration). Today her daughter is in counseling, says Ms. Rivera, and doesn’t trust anyone: “It so messed her up. I can’t protect her.”

“I Can’t protect her”?  Yes you can, devoted mother.  Even if you can’t afford to send your daughter to a fine private school, there is the alternative of home schooling where you have direct charge over your child’s educational environment and content.  “I don’t have the credentials or the ability.”  You have the highest credentials.  You’re the mother!  You have the highest interest. You’re the mother!  Even if you have to work outside the home, there is help available on line.

When you hear all the spouting about “an education president,” pray for and encourage the rise of civil leaders at every level who will disengage government at every level from the field of education.  This would be the position of a civil leader in a biblical society.

There are several purposes for this:
1) Use the blogs as a kind of ever-expanding “school library” to enhance student learning experience
2) increase student interaction as part of the dialectic process of the classical method
3) Contribute to blog traffic that will improve organic search engine rankings and:
a) recruit more students.
b) build up advertising revenue. This will enable us to increase revenue to teachers among other things
4) Create a Biblical worldview mindset among students that relates their studies to real life current events
